When a woman loses her husband, it’s as if the rug has been pulled out from under her feet. She has to face not only her own grief and loneliness, but also the huge burden of comforting her children and raising them alone - usually with no source of income. Her children suffer terribly, too.

Suddenly, this once-dependent woman finds herself making Kiddush. Leading the seder. Speaking to her sons’ rebbeim. Suddenly, carefree children find their home altered forever. Sons have no father to learn with. Daughters have no father to care for them.

Yet the one challenge that dwarfs the others is financial. When a widow can’t buy groceries, or when there’s a turnoff of eviction notice, or when a child can’t get new clothes, it’s as if they lost their husband and father all over again.
