Chanukah is a wondrous time – but for widows and orphans, it can be very painful. When a widow has to take her husband’s place at the menorah, when a boy has to sing MaozTzuralone, when there’s no father coordinating the family dreidel game, it’s devastating.

Going out to Chanukah parties is no easier. Widows feel lost without their husbands; children feel like the “nebachs” of the family. And everyone feels the gaping void as parents, siblings, aunts, uncles and cousins try to make believe things are normal, when they are so not.
